What photographic equipment do you suggest for a safari?
Answer:
This obviously depends on your interest in photography, although many guests don't realise how much they will enjoy taking wildlife photos until they are already on safari. Technology also keeps evolving and keen photographers will want to ensure that they are up to date with the latest offerings. As a general rule, guests who would like to take photographs as simple mementos of people and places will be satisfied with a small digital camera of 4 to 6 mega pixels with a 2 to 5 times optical zoom. For guests who want higher quality pictures of animals a minimum of 8 mega pixels and an 8 times optical zoom is recommended. Avid photographers who wish to take exceptional quality wildlife shots will need a digital SLR camera of at least 8 mega pixels with a minimum of a 300 mm zoom lens, as well as a wider angle lens for scenic pictures. All the major brands, such as Canon, Nikon and Pentax, are recommended. When selecting your camera, remember to consider optical zoom, rather than digital zoom, as this provides much better quality photographs. It is also important to familiarise yourself with your photographic equipment before you leave on safari and make sure that you have all any cables required to download the pictures. A memory card of at least 2 gig is recommended. Lastly, remember to always take your photographs using the highest quality setting on your camera.
